Verb

Indicative tenses: passé simple

This time refers to accomplished activities that took place in the distant past. We only use it in writing, there is no use in spoken language. Many forms of this tense are irregular. Formation:

1st group (parler):

singulier pluriel
1 parlai parlâmes
2 parlas parlâtes
3 parla parlèrent

2nd group (finir):

singulier pluriel
1 finis finîmes
2 finis finîtes
3 finit finirent

in the 3rd group it is formed irregularly. Most popular irregular forms :

Verb être:

singulier pluriel
1 fus fûmes
2 fus fûtes
3 fut furent


Other irregular verbs:
avoir - eus, eus, eut, eûmes, eûmes, eurent
faire - fis, fis, fit, fîmes, fîtes, firent
mettre - mis, mis, mit, mîmes, mîtes, mirent
devoir - dus, dus, dut, dûmes, dûtes, durent
pouvoir - pus, pus, put, pûmes, pûtes, purent
venir - vins, vins, vint, vînmes, vîntes, vinrent
More verbs : dire - dis, voir - vis, savoir - sus, prendre - pris, tenir - tins, vivre - vécus, croire - crus.
Verbs partir, sortir, sentir are conjugated in this tense like finir.
Verbs in -ndre have -ndis : rendre - rendis.
