A series of verb forms is formed in Italian using the auxiliary verbs essere and avere and the form of participio passato . The verbs essere and avere are very irregular.
With the verb essere, following verbs form compound tenses:
| - | reflexive verbs: mi sono lavato; |
| - | most intransitive verbs: sono andato, sei venuto. |
And with the verb avere, following verbs form compound tenses:
| - | transitive verbs (having an object): ho trovato; |
| - | some intransitive verbs like dormire, vivere. |

Rules of concordance:
If we form composite tense with essere, the form of participio passato must match the subject in gender and number:
il uomo è andato, la donna è andata, i signori sono andati, le donne sono andate.
When the verb avere is used, participio passato is generally in the form in –o: il uomo ha scritto la lettera, la donna ha scritto la lettera. Only when the object is before the verb , participio passato can agree in gender and number with this object: la lettera che ho scritta.
