Most common Polish words - part 3



Let's continue with most common Polish words. After knowing the words from part 1 and part 2, you should be able to understand about 50-60% of a text. But it's a good beginning. After learning about 1000 words, you will be able to understand 80-90 % of a text, which gives already rough comprehension.
Polish is a language with much inflexion - so important is also recognizing inflexion forms of given words.

Adverbs and adverbial pronouns:
tu = here
tam = there
potem = afterwards
właśnie = exactly
zawsze = always
nigdy = never
gdzie = where : gdzie on jest ? where is he ?
także = also, too
również = also , too
też, także, również mean the same

Noun: świat = world
sprawa = thing, matter
ręka = hand
sposób = way (to do something)
dziecko = child
koniec = end
praca = work
ziemia = earth, soil
osoba = person
droga = way
stan = state
program = program

Adjectives (rules to make feminine and neuter still apply):
nowy = new : nowa droga, nowa osoba, nowy program
duży = big : duże dziecko
mały = small : małe dziecko
dany = given : dany stan
drogi = dear, expensive : drogi dom (expensive house), droga osoba (dear person), drogie dziecko (dear child)
własny = own : własna praca, własny dom
pewien / pewny = sure, certain, some (in masculine both forms, feminine : pewna, neuter : pewne)

Pronouns :
kto = who : kto to jest ? who is this ?
żaden = no : żaden sposób - no way

Numbers :
drugi = second : pierwszy, drugi
kilka = some
więcej = more

Verbs:
znać = to know somebody (znam, znasz, zna) : znam Roberta
jeść = to eat (jem, jesz, je) : jem to - I eat it
należeć = to belong (należę, należysz, należy) : to należy do Roberta - it belongs to Robert
robić = to do, to make (robię, robisz, robi) : robię to
zrobić = to do, to make (perfective form of robić)
znaleźć = to find
zacząć = to start

Verbs with untypical forms :
powinien = should
należy = one should (also : it belongs)

Conjunctions:
niż = than
aby = in order to, so that
żeby = in order to, so that (aby and żeby mean the same)
oraz = and
lecz = but (ale and lecz mean the same)
jako = as
albo = or

Prepositions:
nad = (with instrumental) over
u = (with genitive) at , by


Forms :
je : je is :
1. accusative form of ono, one : means it or them : znam je - I know them
2. form of jeść : on to je = he eats it

ci : ci is :
1. dative form of ty : robię ci to - I do it to you, chcę ci powiedzieć - I want to tell you, mówię ci to - I say it to you
2. form of plural of ten : ci ludzie

być, mieć, móc, wiedzieć, chcieć, musieć, mówić, myśleć, widzieć, znać, jeść, należeć, robić
List of imperfective verbs from part 1-3 :
zostać, stać się, dać, znaleźć, zacząć , zrobić, powiedzieć
Forms of cases of personal pronouns :
ja (I) : mnie, mi, mną (me)
ty (you) : ciebie, tobie, ci, cię, tobą
my (we) : nas, nam, nami
wy (you all) : was, wam , wami
Examples :
Genitive : It belongs to me... : To należy do mnie, do ciebie, do nas, do was
Accusative : He sees me... : On widzi mnie, ciebie / cię , nas, was (the same form)
Locative: He speaks about me...: On mówi o mnie, o tobie, o nas, o was
Dative : He gives it to me... : On to daje mi (or: mnie), tobie, nam, wam
Instrumental: He is with me... : On jest ze mną, z tobą, z nami, z wami
